What motivates the central character’s actions?

Pi keeps going in order to survive. Early on, Pi is forced to accept that his family is likely dead, and that there wouldn't be a rescue ship to pick him up. As a result, he had to make a choice..... to strive to live or give up. Pi chooses to fight for his life.
