Life of Pi

What are the exceptional circumstances that make it okay for Pi to eat animal fat? How do Pi's current circumstances make it ironic that he is normally a vegetarian?

This is Question 33 in the Code X book for the excerpt "Life of Pi"

Pi must consume the animal fat or starve. He has a difficult time going against his religious beliefs, but eventually he realizes that he must temporarily give them up in order to survive.
