Chapter 89 is filled with anguish, due to the fact that everything Pi has managed to gather is falling apart or no longer useful. The life vests are white, sun-dried and useless; Pi and Parker are exhausted and emaciated; Pi looks to death as sure fire certainty in the very near future.
