Pi changes greatly over the course of the novel. He is always searching for truth, and he is open to interpretations of religious wisdom, human nature and questions of the universe. He consistently changes and adapts to his world, whether he is living a comfortable life near Pondicherry or stuck on a raft with wild animals. Pi learns to eat flesh to stay alive, and although he never treats the animals like human beings, he incorporates them into a kind of extended family on their terms. Pi uses both spirituality and science in his bid for survival, and he continuously adapts and changes his point of view, as he learns about God and the world.
