How does the narrator catch his first flying fish?

Pi caught the flying fish in a blanket.

I clutched at a blanket to protect myself while also trying to catch some of the fish. I received cuts and bruises all over my body.

When it was over, the result, besides a very sore body for me, was six flying fish in the locker and a much greater number in the lifeboat.
