Life of Pi

From the movie/book Life of Pi, what, as a 'civilized' human being, does he lose in the process?

Pi trying to survive on boat.

In my opinion, Pi loses his boyish optimism. One of the lessons his father tried to teach him was that "wild animals" were not his friends. Toward the end of the film, Richard Parker leaves without looking back..... this act proves his father's lesson right.
