Martin Luther King Jr. uses the letter to address the clergy and defend his strategy of nonviolent resistance to racism and oppression. King reaches out to clergy that do not support his ideas and methods for equality. He insists that people have the moral responsibility to break unjust laws in a peaceful manner.
