King responds that they have been waiting since the end of slavery for the equality that was promised but never came. He says that Black Americans will never be treated fairly by simply waiting for white government to decide to do the right thing. King notes that there must be direct action in order for Black Americans to be heard, and that there must be a social justice movement for change to finally happen.
