In essence, Mr. Farnsworth was attacked because he was the county agent. It was his job to enforce farming regulations and government porgrams. Farnsworth made enemies merely because he did his job. He didn't make the laws, he simply had to see that they were followed through. The sherrif blamed the unions for the attack, and all Mr. Farnsworth knew was that he was attacked by white men.
