The factories are no doubt harsh places. They are dirty, unhygenic, and dangerous places to work. Workers, many who are children, are exploited and factory bosses are often portrayed as brutal, heartless, and greedy. in Les Misérables, however, it is the boss who helps the poor escape the injustices of outdated social hierarchies. This is the author's decision not to completely conform to what readers might expect.
