This story is set way into the future. As said in the book, when you turn 11 you have to take a trial. If u get under 900, you fail. The highest score is 1500. When you fail your trial you don't get assigned to school and you live in the poor sectors.

Day is worried about Eden, because he is afraid that he might fail his trial. Day himself failed his own trial, and Eden thinks a lot like Day does. So he is afraid that Eden will have to go to a labor camp like Day did.
