Damascene's letter is initially filled with hope for his family. It is only in the small section added before he attempted to catch the boat that we understand how difficult it must have been to hear about the murders of his family members and the mystery of not knowing about Immaculee. Through this letter, we see how much Damascene felt for his family, and the hope he had for his sister. He know she was strong and asked that she continue to exhibit that strength until they could be together. (Page 173)
