We do not know exactly how mother's life was trying but we do know that her life “ain’t been no crystal stair.” She instructs her son not to go back down the stairs even if he thinks climbing is hard. He should try not to fall because his mother is still going, still climbing even when life gets unbearable. The there are certainly Biblical allusions here. The staircase is has much to do with achieving access to Heaven or the "promised land".
