At the start of the Odyssey, Odysseus has been alone on the island of Ogygia for eight years, captive of the beautiful goddess Calypso. Odysseus pleads with Zeus to free him from Calypso's grasp, and he agrees. Zeus will send the god Hermes to Calypso to ask her to free Odysseus.
