Who is lane? who adopted Jack?

Lane Algernon's butler delivers a number of droll lines which show that he is far from a passive servant.

Jack explains that he has no idea who his parents were, and that he was found, by the man who adopted him, in a handbag in the cloakroom at Victoria Station.
