In this poem, Echeverria illustrates women as people who take charge and assist in the development of a unified Argentina... but only within the stereotypical roles that are assigned to them. Echeverria portrays Maria as unable to protect her family while in the wilderness, which is a direct result of being removed from the homefront... her domestic sphere or domain. He also alludes to the fact that Maria's role requires that she be able to assert change within the boundaries of home and family.
