At the story's conclusion, David is quite lonely and misses Alan. The time has come for him to function on his own as an adult, and although we have seen him mature throughout the story, he isn't quite ready to face the world alone. None-the-less, on of the challenges we all must face as we move into adulthood is the ability to function independently.
