Lee portrays Calpurnia as an intelligent, reliable, and loyal employee of the Finch family. Her relationship to the family is far more than that of a housekeeper.... she cares for the children like they are her own, and she looks out for Atticus. She is kind, caring, and much like a member of the family.

Tom Robinson is also portrayed as a kind, caring, helpful man. Sadly, he doesn't have Calpurnia's intellect and caution, and as a result, he is an easy target for Mayella's manipulation and accusations.
