He has a great relationship with his son, he thinks about his wife and brings home things he knows she loves........ ithers talk about his good sense, but he also has the ability to talk to his son as evidenced in the following quote;

"Bobinôt, who was accustomed to converse on terms of perfect equality with his little son, called the child's attention to certain sombre clouds that were rolling with sinister intention from the west, accompanied by a sullen, threatening roar."

Regardless, we aren't ever apprised of the true meaning of this quote. Does he talk to his son likde an adult, or does he talk down in the language of a child. Other than this, it seems that he and his wife have entered an extremely comfortable stage in their marriage that defies true closeness between a husband and a wife...... this isn't rare, and it doesn't make him like a child.
