I think there are two themes at play here. One is the idea of the small social stature of women.Mrs. Sommers is, like many women at the time, considered the lesser of the genders. An element of Mrs. Sommers's motivation for her impulse purchases relates to her need to assert personal autonomy. Again she feels small and dependant on men to make all financial decisions.
