The story of an hour

At first it looks like Ms. Mallard is crying in despair at the news of her husband's death,

She did not hear the story as many women have heard the same, with a paralyzed inability to accept its significance. She wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment, in her sister's arms.

We later see that she is actually in shock of joy that her husband is dead.
