Karl Shapiro: Selected Poems Background

Karl Shapiro: Selected Poems Background

Born in 1913, Karl Shapiro was an American writer who had a great influence on literature of the time. In 1945, he won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for V-Letter and Other Poems. His writing is often noted for his description of the importance of common things, because without them, there would be no important things either.

Karl Shapiro: Selected Poems was published in 1978 by Random House Publishers and included what he thought was the best of his poetry written from 1940 to the day it was published. Included in the collection are poems from White-Haired Lover and Adult Bookstore. 15 poems included were never published before, but still made it into the collection.
