Bhatta holds immense power because of his shrewd business practices. He presents himself as a generous man, and through his connections to the people in the village, he lends money freely and involves himself in a majority of the deals. Sadly, this enables him to exploit the people he calls his friends by charging excessive interest rates and manipulating them for personal, financial gain. Over time, Bhatta owns almost half the village, and most of the villagers are in his debt.
