The uprising grows more violent and intense. The protestors have shut down the airports. Ports have been bombed or blockaded. They have worked to make it so that the ruling class cannot leave South Africa. In Johannesburg, where the Smales are from, a fire spreads through the suburbs. The fire comes dangerously close to their home. Even though July and the Smales are silent as they listen to the radio relay this information, they are astounded.
