Unfortunately, in our society, reading for pleasure has become rare. People prefer the instant gratification provided by film, games, and other forms of technology.

Gretchen envies Axel's ability to do things that she herself would never consider or be allowed based upon her gender. Girls (women) were not adventurers, they married, took care of the home, and eventually.... they took care of the children.
