Other than the fact that the author actually calls the novel a comic epic poem in prose, Joseph Andrews can be labeled as such mostly because it contains many of the common perquisites. The hero of this story is just an ordinary boy, and "though the action of the novel is not as great as the action of an epic, it is enough to term the novel a comic epic...Through the journey of Joseph, Fielding satirizes the society of the day and ridicules them." The element of wars, digression, discovery and moral lesson are just some of the perquisites contained with an epic and all are present here in Joseph Andrews.
