There is no real information about Dove and the British in Chapter 4; Dove does not begin to work for the British until later in the novel. Dove has to work for the British because he causes the damaging of Johnny's hand by giving him a cracked chalice which then causes Johnny to get his hand burned in hot silver. Dove is fired and goes to work for the British. In Chapter 9, however, Dove, complaining about how no one likes him including the British, drinks excessively and reveals that the British Officer for whom he works wants his war horse saddled and ready at 4:30 the next morning.
