Explain the apprentice system.
In the first chapter and first section they talk about it but I don’t understand exactly what or how it it works.

Apprenticeship included a period of years, during which the apprentice would work for and learn from the merchant. In Johnny's case, he is apprenticed to a silversmith.... learning the trade, and receiving room and board in exchange for work for Mr. Lapham. Over time, Johnny will be able to open his open shop or continue working for Mr. Lapham.
