Jane Eyre

Jane Eyre Quote Explanation

Quote: “Prejudices, it is well known, are most difficult to eradicate from the heart whose soil has never been loosened or fertilized by education: they grow there, firm as weeds among stones.”

What is the significance of the quote? How does it contribute to the novel as a whole?

In context, this quote is significant because it illustrates Jane's place in the world. For most of her young life, she is bounces around without a real home.... never knowing real love. Sadly, Jane knows that the people who criticize her don't know her at all. Their prejudices are based upon her circumstances, and there seems to be nothing she can do to change their preconceived notions.
