What was the point of Ishmael insisting that the narrator do the work on his own?

In chapter 2 Ishmael point put that for the narrator to learn properly, he must actively participate in his own education: he cannot merely sit and listen to Ishmael. The narrator must struggle and “work through” his own feelings and prejudices about culture and society in order to process the information.
