Why did it seem to Ishmael that he would never actually be able to travel? What were some of the difficulties that he encountered in the process of getting ready for his trip?

Ishmael is only a child so travelling is a problem. He is also a boy travelling with other boys. Many people and tribes are afraid of child soldiers so these boys are often looked upon with suspicion and fear. Food and water were big problems in travelling.
