why is Mr. Norton so affected by Jim Trueblood's story?

Although Mr. Norton has visited campus many times, he was not aware of struggles African Americans were facing at the time. Post slavery did not mean African Americans were free. They still faced rampant discrimination, poverty, hunger, and unemployment.
