There are quite a few themes you could consider. I am partial to the theme of isolation. This is a story about a man with no family or close connections. He's alone wherever he goes. This invisible man is not some crazy transient. On the contrary he is a scientific genius surrounded by people who either don't care about him or understand him. He is literally surrounded by people with no emotional connection with any of them; it is really quite sad.
