I know that Ellison was careful to balance repetition and racially charged settings to make his point. Consider the "Battle Royal" at the beginning of the book. The narrator is blindfolded and placed in a ring with several other fighters. This racially charged setting was meant to entertain the white crowd at the expense of black people.
