It is not so much a question of science going wrong as scientists living in isolation. The Invisible Man does not share his science or contemplate the ethics of his science with other scientists. Instead he lives separately and alone with his science which, of course, brings bad things. If he had shared his science, instead of just trying it out himself, things might have gone differently.
