The bandaged stranger shows up to Iping in a blinding snowstorm. He is covered except for his nose. He is spectacled with sidelights that look like he is wearing a diving helmet.

It was early February when the stranger had arrived at the Bramblehurst station on a wintry day. The snowfall was heavy and the stranger was covered in snow. The stranger was carrying a portmanteau in his thickly gloved hands. He wore a coat and a hat which covered his whole face and only the shiney tip of his nose could be seen. He was still so cold that he barged in the Inn and demanded for a fire and a room. It was that time of the year when hardly any visitors came to stay in "Coaches&Horeses" Inn.
