How does neurotic anxiety develop, according to Freud?
Neurotic anxiety develops when the libido (the sexual component of the psyche) is aroused or excited but is not able to be "discharged." Freud believes that anxiety is a primary condition that causes repression, rather than being caused by repression, but it is this repression that causes the neurotic anxiety to worsen as it is the repression that causes the symptoms of anxiety. Once the symptoms of anxiety occur, they will inspire more anxiety, as the patient will want to leave whatever place is triggering the symptoms.
