Why were people confused by the actions of the Himalayan guides?

This question is posed in Chapter 1. As he descended the summit, Krakauer knew people will be asking questions about the catastrophic trip. One of the questions would be why these experienced guides could push amateur climbers ahead, in conditions that were less than favourable, beyond their expertise.
