Both Doug Hansen and Krakauer were suffering from frostbite, altitude sickness and various other ailments. Two weeks prior to the climb, Doug Hall had minor surgery on his throat. Consequently he was susceptible to infection. His reparatory system was really hurting. They decide that Hansen has a frozen larynx.
