What was your initial sense of McCandless's mental condition compared to what you think now?

I had heard Chris was an interesting free-sprit who came to an untimely death. I still think Chris was an in interesting free-spirit. His ideology and counter-culture ideas had a lot of merit. He was also very charismatic. After reading the book, I saw flaws in his personality. He abandoned his family which was very sad.
