Nobility is very much a subjective idea. Chris McCandless still intrigues people with his counter-culture quest to find truth outside of a society based on consumerism and vanity. Certainly there is nobility in that but even Chris's altruistic desires had a darker side. In trying to attain the self-identifying ideals of his hero Thoreau, Chris turned his back on his family and the people who loved him. This was not noble. Like most of us, each character in the book had traits, using a very general definition, of "nobility". These noble traits, however, come with all the trappings of human folly.
