What is wrong with Alex's supplies?

In Chapter One, Gallien notes that Alex's only food is a ten-pound bag of rice. His boots are cheap, and they aren't waterproof or insulated. He also points out that Alex's gun isn't powerful enough to kill large game, and he doesn't have a compass.
