Krakauer had never met Chris personally but recognized himself in much of what motivated Chris. Krakauer was a mountaineer introduced to the 'sport' by his father at aged 8. Like Chris Krakauer time in the wilderness alone in Alaska. Krakauer is quoted as saying about himself and Chris that , "I got away with it. Chris didn't. That's the only difference."
