What is it about McCandless that makes those he encounters remember/care for him?

The people Chris meets along the way see him as a sweet, caring, helpful and trustworthy kid. He's the kind of young man people want to help. It was obvious he'd lost his way, and the numerous people he caame into contact with could see he needed help.
