His legacy is, in all likelihood, the lesson that one does not go into the woods unprepared, that survival is calculated and planned, that the unexpected can happen at any time, and that the sense of adventure never leaves those who embark on such a trek. He was a free spirit in so many ways and showed us how such a life has challenges and glorious highs.
