What confusion was there about the big animal that Chris shot? What was it?

I know he shoots a moose and feels terrible about it, but there was a lot of talk from critics saying that wasn't the animal. What animal did they think it was?

Chris only had a Remington .22 rifle. Many hunters view this as little better than a pellet gun. I suppose it is possible to kill a Moose with this if you hit the right spot at very close range but still unlikely. Some people think he might have killed a small deer.
