Into the Wild

Into the wild

Some contend that McCandless was arrogant or stupid in going into the Alaskan wilderness only to die in an abandoned bus. Do you agree or disagree? Support your opinion with evidence from the film.

Chis was completely ill prepared. He had little in the way of gear and experience. Chris goes into the wild bringing a rifle, some ammunition, rice, a small cook stove, books, a book about plants, and a few other items. He leaves his map behind on the truck dashboard of the man who drops him off. Many native Alaskans were shocked to hear how clueless he was about what was in store for him. Chris romanticized the idea of living in the Alaskan wilds like Thoreau dis in Walden. The realities of the Alaskan wild had little to do with Thoreau's book.
