Why is it obvious that Thoreau would have an influence on Chris?

Thoreau took a similar road to Chris' and would totally have approved of his actions, although he might have found them a bit extreme. Thoreau's intentional separation from society would have paralled Chris' separation from his family. Living off the land is completely in tune with Thoreau's life on Walden Pond, but again, he could take a run to the store.... and he had visitors.
