In this chapter, how does McCandless show his remarkable ability to connect with people yet also an inability to understand human nature?

McCandless was a very endearing character. In Chapter Five, we once again see him making friends... his ability to do this is uncanny. He's charming, intelligent, open, and caring..... these people know little about him, but he can make them open up and share most everything. Chris makes people feel important, and in turn, they love him.
