I think that there was an intensity about both of them. Although they held different passions both pursued them with unflinching intensity,

"the set of his (Walt's) jaw betrays an undercurrent of nervous energy...there is no mistaking from whence Chris's intensity came".

Both father and son also longed for something bigger, something that defied the status-quo. Although what they searched for was different in nature the "wonder" remained the same,

"there was always a little wanderlust in the family, and it was clear early on that Chris had inherited it".
